Dear Ridleans,

An inauspicious start I’m afraid...

Christ’s Allstars 3 – 2 The Feds

We were beaten in our first game of the season, but the signs are good for future games.

The game started promisingly, with The Feds looking strong and confident. But directly after a strong attack, we were caught out in defence, and Christ’s scored the first goal. 1-0. We came back strong, and with a lovely floated ball in from the right wing, Dan Drew set up Pete Miller for a Feds equaliser. 1-1. Having changed positions slightly to gives us greater attacking edge, we again were caught short in defence. A lovely curling finish from the Christ’s attack and they were in the lead once again. 2-1.

Half-time gave us a chance to catch our breath, recuperate (it was our first game of the season!) and prepare for the second half. There were a couple of substitutions made, and we set out for the second half determined to turn the game around. Unfortunately, again our struggle to get numbers back defensively resulted in another goal for Christ’s. This time, yours truly was culpable with a mistimed tackle, which having been avoided by the Christ’s centre-forward, left him free to gently lift the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper. 3-1.

Again the Feds rallied, and game back strong. Jon Sanders had now moved into an attacking left-wing position, and from there he launched a fabulous cross, which Pete Miller met with a peach of a header. 3-2.

The final 15 minutes the Feds were on top. A blistering run from defence from yours truly ended with a pass through the opposition’s defensive line to Pete Miller, hoping for his hat-trick. Sadly, he was judged to have been in an offside position – if only we had a video reply referee!! In the closing minutes, Sam Butler had a shot which narrowly missed the far post,
but sadly we were not able to capitalise upon our pressure.

Despite lacking match-fitness, the Feds gave their all, and there were several commendable performances. However, man of the match has to go in the end to Pete Miller, without whose two goals we would have felt very disconsolate.

Special thanks must go to Zoe and Ezra Steele, who braved the cold to watch Harry ‘Handz’ Steele make his goalkeeping debut for the Feds.

We are expecting to play our next fixture this coming Wednesday afternoon, against Queens II. More details to follow shortly.

Yours sportingly,
Graham
